Synopsis: A medieval miracle play is staged by a provincial Italian company in the 1650s. The play is set within a village community savaged by pestilence, which has left the women infertile. When a beautiful male child is born, it is hailed as a fertility icon. However, the child's ambitious 17-year old sister proclaims herself the mother, and she exploits the child's powers, pitting herself against the Church.
